INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
Chico Animal Shelter offers unpaid internships for college students from Butte College and Chico State.
Internships are offered with the following understanding:
1. This is an unpaid position and there is no expectation of compensation.
2. The internship will provide training that would be similar to that which would be given in an educational environment, including the clinical and other hands-on training provided by educational institutions.
3. The internship shall be tied to the intern’s formal education program by integrated coursework or the receipt of academic credit.
4. The internship period will correspond to the academic calendar.
5. The internship’s duration is limited to the period in which the internship provides the intern with beneficial learning.
6. The intern’s work shall complement, not displace, the work of paid employees while providing significant educational benefits to the intern.
7. The internship is conducted without entitlement to a paid job at the conclusion of the internship.

The following internships are offered:
Canine Behavior Intern
This position is for someone who is interested in working with shelter staff to improve the lives of dogs during their stay at the shelter, as well as improve their chances of successful adoption and permanent placement into a home. Staff will provide training on dog behavior and behavior modification. Intern will explore behavior issues in sheltered dogs and work with staff to develop and implement behavior modification plans for specific dogs/behaviors.
Qualifications:
Marketing Intern
This position is for someone interested in working with shelter staff to find ways to market adoptable animals, promote shelter services and create public service announcements for Chico Animal Services. Staff will provide photos and content to be used for marketing materials developed by the intern. Intern will explore various marketing tools available such as print media, social media, and broadcast and digital media, and come up with a comprehensive media campaign to be used now and in the future.

- Animal Science major or a related field, preferably with a desire to work with small animals.
- Willingness to work with dogs and people.
- Some knowledge of dog behavior a plus, but strong willingness to learn is paramount.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills, and the ability to work well independently as well as part of a team.
