Carter
Carter came to our shelter as a stray in December 2018. Carter was fearful and would nip when scared, but once he had time to warm up to people, he was so playful and sweet. We knew his perfect person was out there somewhere. Luckily, we found a patient person who took him home as a "foster to adopt" and let him have time to adjust. His foster, Megan, finalized his adoption at the beginning of August, and today sent us this update:
"Thank you City of Chico Animal Shelter for giving me the opportunity to foster to adopt this good boy this summer! We are doing so well!!!! Carter has his own backyard where he can sniff, pee, and sun bathe daily! When I’m at work Carter spends his time sleeping on my bed and playing with his multitude of squeaky stuffies. I look forward to his wiggly chopped tail everyday when I’m driving home to him! I am so glad you gave me a chance, so that I could give Carter a chance!! No more barking at men or biting people! He is a sweet and settled two year old now:) "

Miss Mittens
Miss Mittens came to the shelter in June 2017 as a stray with a foxtail in her eye. She was treated and adopted out three weeks later.
"Good morning! We adopted Kiitty, Catrina, on June 24th 2017. We have renamed her, Miss Mittens. She is thriving , exceedingly. She had gained 1.5 lbs. In 12 days and her coat is filling out and so soft. A very happy kitty and so are we... Our 3 year old granddaughter came for a visit after a few days and Miss Mittens came out from under the bed to greet her and even allowed her to pet her, allowed our granddaughter to rest her head on her. It was very Special 😄" -Joyce |
Ike
Ike came to the shelter in October 2016 when he was found as a stray. He was adopted in November 2016 after being in the shelter for a month.
I am so glad to have Ike in my life. After a long day of treacherous classes and long hours of work/school, I can come home to a super cute fluff ball waiting for me to show him love. I love simply staring at him because he's so darn cute. I can't help but feel relaxed when I see him plopped out & snoozing away. Thank you so much for taking him in and caring for him before I had the opportunity of meeting the bun of my life. Keep up the good work :)

Pardon
Pardon (previously Mr. Serious) was adopted in October 2016 after eight months in the shelter. We recently received this happy update from his new family:
"Hey everyone...I would reach out and send some photos of Mister Serious. We have renamed him Pardon. We think that the name is appropriate since he got a 'Pardon' from the shelter. He is such a wonderful dog. Although he knows the basic commands we thought it was a good idea for him to go to school and get excellent training. So far so good! In the morning he walks and runs the land without a care in the world...in the afternoon or while we are away he has a very large yard and fun toys to keep him busy. In the early evening we are walking dirt roads and enjoying the wildlife (ok sooo he might like to chase a few deer) and at night he has his bed inside which is cozy and safe. He is very active and gets all the attention. He is very protective of his new home and family. He is amazing with our young niece and my elderly parent when they visit. And Pardon and my husband Tim really have an amazing bond already . We really are so grateful for the animal shelter and everyone that helped us make our final decision on Pardon...our family is now complete!"

Rufio
Rufio, formerly Vaughn, was adopted September 2016.
His owners messaged us to say:
"We adore him!! We adopted "vaughn" now Rufio... He's the best and wanted to share some pics."

Chupie
Chupie came to the shelter in December 2014. She was very shy and it took a while for her to warm up to the staff. She was loved dearly by the staff, because she had a spunky and fun personality and could be a little bit grumpy at times. She was adopted 6 months later.
We recently got an e-mail update from her family.
"Chupie is doing well. She is the funniest little dog. She only likes one person at a time. I was her favorite for about 4 days. Matt recently had surgery however, and Chupie did not understand why she couldn't sit on his lap. Now grandpa is her favorite. She makes us laugh every day."

Vader
Vader is a big black cat that came to the shelter in February 2015 with a terrible ear infection. The infection seemed to have been there a long time, and because of this his ear was completely crumpled. After some rounds of medication, Vader was placed up for adoption. One of our volunteers happened to have a family member that was interested in adding a new cat to the family. Vader sounded like a perfect fit! His new family lived all the way in southern California, and our volunteer transported him down there! Today we received some photos of him in his new home, and boy does he look happy!
Oakley
Oakley came to the shelter in February 2015 as a stray and sadly no one came to look for him. This pup sure was handsome with his blue eye and brindle coat! He was adopted after a couple of weeks at the shelter and is loving his new life! Today his mother sent us some photos of him! She says that "he is the most loving pup and has a lot of doggy friends to play with!" Sounds like a perfect match!
Cupcakes
"She's been fittingly named Cupcakes as she is sweetest little girl I have ever owned. She currently lives in the same cage as her new sister, Biscotti, though they are separated by a divider. They don't quite know what to think of each other yet, but they love saying hello through the bars (even if that means going UNDER her hay rack). She already comes when I call her, wheeks when she wants a treat, and loves being picked up and cuddled. She wants to be pet 24/7, and I am more than happy to oblige!
My guinea pigs mean more to me than you could ever know, so thank you so much for introducing me to this wonderful new pig daughter lol - we look forward to many years of cuddling, napping, and eating as much Romaine lettuce, carrots, and cucumbers as possible.
She's my first pet I've adopted from a shelter, and it has been a great experience. I plan on adopting all my future piggies this way now ♥"

Penny
Penny came to the shelter in September 2014 as a cute little kitten. It didn't take long for her to get adopted!
Her new family loves her and set us a little update and some photos of her in her new home:
"It's the story of a little black cat that wasn't shy and didn't really know how to be a cat. One cat immediately took to having a new family member and they were playing together from day one and grooming each other by the end of the week. Another cat took a little more time to adapt, but now they love to play together pushing toys back and forth under the bedroom door. Or a box. Or the couch. Or a blanket. Now they sometimes sleep in the "triple spoon." She also has a teenage brother, a teenage sister, and a dad who all love her very much. Every living creature at this house is happier and has a better life because we have Penny." -Jadene |
Benjamin
Benjamin the cute little terrier mix came to the shelter in November 2014 as a stray. He was very shy and the shelter was scary for him. Luckily, we had a foster home who was able to take him in and care for him until he found his forever home! Benji is now happy part of a family. He even has a dog brother named Jake!
Cooper
Cooper is an adorable papillon mix dog that came to the shelter in August 2014. While in the shelter, Cooper didn't really like other dogs and he was protective of his food. Because of this, it took him a couple of months to find a home willing take him home and work on his behavior. Luckily for Cooper, he found his forever home at the end of October!
|
Cooper loves his new life, and most of his bad habits have gone away completely! His new mom, Stella, said he loves to play with other dogs and doesn't mind if she takes away his food!
"I love this boy. He loves me. He seriously doesn't let me out of his sight. Thank you." Cooper and Stella |
Cuddles
Cuddles came to the shelter in March 2013 when her owner could no longer care for her. Cuddles was a senior dog and had lived in her original home since she was born. Being in the shelter was scary for Cuddles and it took our staff a lot of time and patience to win her trust. Cuddles eventually became our front-office dog, and would spend time with us in the lobby during the day.
Senior dogs are often overlooked at shelter, and Cuddles was very patient while waiting to find a new family.
After 9 months at the shelter, Cuddles finally found her forever home in January 2014!

Cuddles loves her new home, which is on a farm! Cuddles' owner, Kate, stops by every now and then to give us updates on Cuddles and show us adorable photos. Cuddles has other dogs to play with and a lot of room to roam. She even gets to hang out in the office with her new owner, just like she was able to do here at the shelter. Cuddles could not have found a happier place to spend the rest of her life!

Lady
Lady is a shy little jack russell mix that came to the shelter in May 2014. Lady could be slow to warm up to people and a little bit touch sensitive, but had a fun and loving personality. Lady was finally adopted in November after a five month long stay in the shelter.
Today, Lady's family sent us an update e-mail:
Shelter staff,
Thank you so much for taking care of Lady. Just wanted to let you know a little about Lady's new life. We both fell in love with her quickly. She definitely has a little "Jack Russell attitude " but is very affectionate. She melded well with us and our old cat. She let me give her a bath the first night, and we clipped her nails the following day, with just a few yelps. She has found her forever home. She is also very good in the back yard and traveling in the car.
Thank you all, again. Hope you have a great holiday season!

Taz
Taz came to the shelter as a stray and unfortunately he was missing quite a lot of his fur! Taz has the sweetest little personality and was a lot of fun to have around. Luckily for him, our vet looked him over and it was determined that his skin condition was not contagious. Taz was adopted quickly and his new family loves him!
Shortly after going home, Taz's adopted mother sent us this message:
We just wanted to say thank you for taking care of Taz! He now has his 'fur'ever home and is fitting in perfectly!

Bandit
Bandit came to the shelter as a stray with a severe eye infection. No one came looking for poor little Bandit and it was determined that his eye was too badly damaged to be repaired. Luckily for Bandit, we were able to raise money to have his eye removed and he felt SO much better after the surgery. He was placed in a foster home until he was old enough to be adopted out. We received an e-mail a few days ago from his new family!
Hello Chico Animal Shelter Family!

Graham
Graham is a little wirehair dachshund mix that came to the shelter as a stray in April 2014. He was adopted quickly and today we received an e-mail from his family to tell us how he was doing.
"This is our new adopted pup, Graham. We adopted him from Chico Animal Shelter and we just adore him! Our thanks go to all the staff for helping us find just the right dog for our family. He loves all other dogs, small critters and kids!" -Margie

Cano
Cano was adopted in 2013 as a little kitten. His owners describe him as a dog trapped in a cat's body. He loves to cuddle with his dog-friend, Hogan. He also loves to snuggle with his humans.
Tony
Tony (formerly Logan) was adopted from the shelter in April. He is a beautiful St. Bernard that was found in town as a stray. No owners came to look for him, so one of our staff members contacted a St. Bernard Rescue who happened to know of someone in the area that had been looking to add another St. Bernard to their family. When they came to town to meet Tony, it was love at first sight.
Today we received and e-mail and pictures of Tony in their home.

"Logan" is now "Tony" and loving life with Sadie in Paradise.
Photos of his favorite spots, especially sitting with Brian and the cat in the evenings and getting a little Sadie love. This past weekend he started hanging out on the picnic table which is pretty funny.
He's also very familiar with riding in a truck - the cab of the truck, that is. Quite a sight to see Brian driving down the road with Tony in the front seat and Sadie in the back!
We love him!

Merida and Fergus
Merida and Fergus (formerly Bonnie and Clyde) were adopted in November 2013. The two bunnies were very bonded to one-another and lived together in a foster home until they could find their perfect home. Today we received an e-mail from their mother!
Hi guys! I finally have pictures to pass along to the bunny's old foster home.
A few days after they moved in I was watching Brave the Disney movie and they both jumped onto my bed and faced the T.V. to watch the movie just about the whole time. So it was only fitting that they were re-named Merida and Fergus like the characters in Brave :) Merida's favorite things are papaya treats, cilantro, and exploring the linen closet. Fergus loves carrot puffs, his slinky, and cardboard box mazes! They just had a vet visit last week and they are both healthy and happy! Thanks for everything!

Mr. Nibbles
Mr. Nibbles is a special little chihuahua that was brought to the shelter as a stray in July 2013. Mr. Nibbles was very nervous in the shelter and new people scared him, but he loved the staff members so much! He's a little ball of personality! Lucky for Mr. Nibbles, after five months in the shelter, he found his forever home! His new mom came into the shelter not expecting to bring home a dog the very same day, but she fell in love with Nibbles on the spot! She was very understanding of his needs and he took to her really quickly.
A couple of weeks after bringing him home, his new parents brought Nibbles to visit the shelter staff.
They love him SO much! He follows his mom around like a shadow and is enjoying being spoiled!

Meatloaf
Meatloaf (formerly Addie) is a little bunny that was brought into the shelter as a stray. She didn't stay in the shelter long before she was adopted to a loving home with a new bunny friend! Today we received an e-mail from her new mom!
I adopted meatloaf a little over a week ago (1/22) and wow has she blossomed already! She went from a shy little bully bunny to hopping on my feet in the kitchen when I am getting their food and hopping on my lap and binkying everywhere! It's hard to believe this is the same bunny that wouldn't leave her cage. Rupert and Meatloaf are doing very well bonding and I can even trust them alone together. They are constantly together - they eat, sleep, drink, beg for food and pets, and lounge together. Rupert makes Meatloaf feel more secure and she is more outgoing when Rupert is in close range to her. I've even seen them grooming each other! Rocky introductions can turn into a love story :)
Lulu
Little Lulu came into the shelter as a stray in November 2013. She is an adorable little girl and we were surprised that no one came to look for her. After being in the shelter for only a couple of weeks, someone visiting town from Chester stopped by shelter and fell in love with Lulu immediately.
Today, her new parents sent us an e-mail with a little update and some pictures. Here is what they have to say about her:

Lulu is a joy & delight! She's so smart, so cute, so friendly & loveable, and acts likes she's always lived here. She loves her big back yard, will chase & retrieve tennis balls faster than a speeding bullet. When she catches one she's going so fast that she does a little hand stand. We've started some agility games, which she really likes, & loves going uptown meeting new people.
You can tell we really love her & want to thank you all again for all your care for her & help with our adoption.

Sophie
Sophie is an adorable little maltese mix that was brought to the shelter as a stray. Sadly, no owners came looking for her. Sophie was adopted after being in the shelter for just over a week! Sophie was groomed and spayed before leaving the shelter and her new mom loves her so much!
We got an e-mail update including pictures, from her new mom:
We got an e-mail update including pictures, from her new mom:
I just wanted to let you all know that Sophie is doing just great! She took to her new home right away. She LOVES the backyard. She runs laps around the perimeter and has taken the time to sniff EVERYTHING at least twice!
She is doing great at potty training. She had a couple small accidents the first day I brought her home, but she hasn't had a single accident since! She is comfortable in her crate at night and when I can't supervise her directly (like when I shower). She has come out of her shell and is energetic and exuberant. She races around the house and loves to play. The only problem I am having is getting her to use the doggy door. She HATES the doggy door and absolutely refuses to go through it on her own. It is something that we will have to continue to work on. I'm sure she will come to be more comfortable with it over time.
She had her first appointment with the Vet on Friday and he pronounced her perfect! I started her on her heartworm medication this weekend. She seems perfectly happy and is eating like a little pig. I expect she will put on a pound or two in no time.
Thanks so much for bringing us together!

Ginger
Ginger is an adorable little tortie that was brought to the shelter with her brother in July. The kittens were very young and were placed in a foster home until they were old enough to adopt out. Their foster mom, Sheryl, was absolutely in love with them--especially Ginger. She took pictures of them and wrote bios and we posted them on Petfinder. From there, we ended up receiving an e-mail from a woman in Nevada that had fallen in love with Ginger after seeing her online. Jennifer wrote to us, saying that she couldn't stop thinking about Ginger after seeing her pictures, and was hoping we could adopt her to her despite the distance. After numerous e-mails, a reference letter from her vet, and finally a signed adoption contract--Ginger officially belonged to Jennifer. Jennifer happened to have a friend that works about an hour away from Chico, and she was willing to pick up the kitten and bring her back to Jennifer. A couple weeks after that first e-mail, Ginger is finally home!
Jennifer wrote to us today to tell us how Ginger is doing:
"I just wanted to say that I got to finally meet and hold little Ginger yesterday as my friend who picked her up this past Friday from you arrived home in Nevada. She is a precious angel, so sweet! I loved the note from her foster mama, with her little toy. I emailed her foster mama and told her how she was doing as well and cried when she replied with a baby picture of Ginger and her brother Sullivan and their story from when they were found! It is so wonderful how this all came together, thank you so much for your help!

Cora was adopted from the shelter in September. Her new family absolutely loves her.

Jillian
Jillian (formerly Matilda) came to the shelter with her sister, Sheena in September. They were both dirty and severely matted, but had shining personalities. Sadly, no owner came looking for the girls but we were able to find them homes quickly after being put up for adoption. A local groomer at Trailblazer's Pet Supply offered to groom the pups for us free of cost. They were so happy to be free of all their matted fur! Matilda was adopted into a loving home where she now has a brother named Pippin! Her new parents love her very much and have sent us picture updates of her in her new home!
Cricket and Red
These brothers were brought into the shelter in the summer of 2012. After living in the shelter for a couple of months, they were adopted together to a couple in Garden Grove, California. The day they left the shelter, they took a 9 hour car ride to their new home. Now, Cricket and Red are big happy boys that love to cuddle and make mischief.
Tangerine
Tangerine and his new family.
Tangerine is a special cat that came to the shelter in July. He was found caught in a chain-link fence, hanging by his leg. One of our animal control officers freed him from the fence and brought him to the vet. The vet attempted to save his leg, but the damage was too severe. It had to be amputated. With generous donations from the public, the shelter was able to afford the surgery! He even got a news story written about him!
Just over a month later, Tangerine was getting to be a pro at walking with only three legs, and quickly found a loving home!

Milo
Milo (then he was called Carlos) at the shelter
Milo came to the shelter as a stray in June 2013. He was found at a local elementary school, and he was so scared he ran into an office where he hid behind a copy machine. Animal Control was called to get him, and they were able to coax him out. At the shelter, it was obvious that new people and situations scared him but he still warmed up to staff members quickly. He was adopted in August 2013 to a family who understood his needs.
His new family sent us this email a few days ago:
Just wanted to let you know that "Carlos" (renamed Milo) is doing great with his new family. He has fitted into our family like a glove.

Bella
Bella, a little kitten, came to us as a stray with an upper respiratory infection. After being treated for her kitty cold, she was feeling much better and was adopted in July. Her new family--including two big dogs--love her so much!
We received an e-mail from her adopter, Karen, a couple of days ago:
Here are some pics of Bella with her new family of big girls. She is the sweetest kitten and just loves her big friends. Thank you so much for the great addition to our family of pets.

Tick
Today we received this letter from Tick, a dog we adopted out about a month ago:
"Translation:
Hello friends! I love my new life! I get to go on walks almost every day and now that I've figured out the whole leash thing and am not so scared I love being outside and exploring the neighborhood. I like not living just in the back yard! I get to go to the dog park a lot and get me comfortable around other dogs and I have a neighbor dog my size named Gizmo who I love to play with.
I've even learned a few tricks! I can sit, lie down, and dance on command and I know to "wait" when my person tells me to. Thank you so much to those few of you who worked with me to help me keep it together and stay people-positive while I was in lockup. Without you I might have disappeared entirely into my fear and anxiety.
Thank you helpful humans! I have a really awesome life. I'm even (kinda) friends with a big orange cat who only scares me sometimes.
- Tick
p.s. I'm not food aggressive at all! I was just really really nervous. I'm sorry I bit the fake hand."
Stanley
Stanely came to us as a stray in July 2012. He was scared and shy. Slowly, and with a lot of patience, understanding, and practice in social situations, Stanley began to come out of his shell. After almost five months waiting for the perfect home, Stanley went home with a family. The happy little guy now lives in a home complete with both a human sister and doggy sister.
Timothy
Timothy sleeping next to a cat toy
Timothy was adopted in 2012. His owners' previous cat had died of old age and they were looking for a companion. They took Timothy home as a foster and within a couple of weeks decided they wanted to keep him. Timothy even gets taken outside to play on a cat leash! He has a very happy life.
Ava
Ava at home
Ava was surrendered to the shelter in May 2012. At first, she was so afraid that she wouldn't leave her dog house. After working with her for a few weeks, Ava became accustomed to the shelter and would come out to play and cuddle with staff members. She still remained timid with new people, but we could definitely see her potential. In October, she was adopted.
Ava at the shelter
A month later, her owner sent us this message:
She is an incredibly sweet dog, and I am completely in love with her. She gets along super well with my roommate and the other dog in the house. She loves going on walks and playing tug-of-war, and she especially loves taking up all of the space on my bed. Thank you so much for all of your help. -Andrea

Pestle
Pestle was found abandoned, tied up at the Diamond Match Factory in December 2012. She was scared and difficult to handle. Staff members worked with her, slowly, until she warmed up to them and were able to both vaccinate and play with her, but she was still wary of new people. After she had been here about a month, someone in Oregon contacted the shelter asking about a dog she thought might have been surrendered here. Once she sent us a picture, we immediately recognized the dog. We explained the situation, and she instantly offered to drive down from Oregon to adopt the dog that she had known a couple years before. Before she was able to come get the dog, however, Pestle was diagnosed with heartworms. This didn't stop her. She still drove down to pick up the dog and began heartworm treatment when she was back in Oregon.

Lisa sent us this message after taking the dog home:
Pestle is a dream dog. I remembered all about her and apparently she remembers me too. She is the most well behaved dog I've ever met. We walked to town and she barely needed a leash. She listens to every command and is by my side constantly. This is the best rescue story I've heard yet. Thank you for helping us reunite. She will be visiting a vet on Monday and I will begin treating her heartworms. She is healing from the spay wonderfully and it brings tears to my eyes to see her bolting at top speed over our pasture. She is finally home!
Thank you forever, Lisa and Pestle

Missy
Missy came to us in May 2012. She was a shy and sensitive cat, but liked being pet and given affection. Because of her shy nature and a tendency to hide in her bed, she was often overlooked. After six months at the shelter, she finally found a loving home with a family that loved her quiet, calm nature.

Bailey came to us a stray with a large abscess on her neck. We had the abscess treated and soon after she found a home with two human brothers to play with.
