I came to Chico Animal Shelter (CAS) a little over two years ago and met my first dog "Left Behind". Pretzel was a beautiful pit bull with some serious issues. I was told that she was aggressive to other dogs and I also observed that she would react to other things such as bicycles, small children and cats. I once raised my arm suddenly and say her cower which indicated that her aggression was probably triggered by fear. CAS decided to keep working with her and I walked her many times over a period of 18 months. Gradually she became calmer and more socialized. When she reached the point that she could walk within ten feet of another dog without reacting if was decided that she could be available for adoption, to the right party. Late last year she was adopted and was left behind no more. The patience and willingness to keep working with a dog with issues is a part of the CAS philosophy and the reason I keep volunteering. I will have some more stories of animals "left behind".
