Bernadette is very picky about the company she keeps. Most animals are fine, some women are OK, but most men are definitely not. Of course this was a challenge to an old veteran male dog walker. I remembered the advice given to me by a professional dog trainer to approach gently and surreptitiously by slipping a treat into the kennel without making eye contact for weeks. When the dog will address you calmly you can start giving them a treat directly and even start sitting down next to the kennel so they start associating your smell and voice with getting a treat. Finally address them with a leash in your hand. If they are wagging their tail and looking at you directly you can try to enter their kennel. Yesterday Bernadette let me into her kennel and let me put a leash on her. She seemed stunned at this event and stared at me as if I had appeared from outer space, but she came with me and after a few minutes accepted that we were walk partners. This is great progress for Bernadette and I look forward to more walks with her.
